He walked up the stairs, tiptoeing as quietly as possible past his daughter's bedroom, so as not to wake her. He opens the door to the bedroom he shares with his wife, wincing as it squeaks slightly. His business has kept him late again, and they have gone to sleep without him. He sits on the end of the bed and sighs as he loosens his tie. In the background, the soft rustle of his wife's gentle breathing relaxes him. Somehow, just being near her isolates him from what has happened, allowing him to breahte easily for the first time today. He needs this. But as he pulls the cover over himself and curls around his wife's sleeping body, he knows it can't last. So long and goodnight. |
